Theme 1 – Learning for Sustainability: Developing language skills and global competence through partnerships with China
Learning for sustainability (LfS) is an approach to life and learning which enables learners, educators, schools and their wider communities to build a socially-just, sustainable and equitable society. We can help our young people learn Mandarin through different curricular approaches that have as their goal achieving a sustainable and equitable world.
This group shall look at ways of integrating Learning for Sustainability with Mandarin learning and teaching and discuss some of the ways in which CISS has supported schools and share some good examples from practitioners.
Theme 2 – Mobility: visits to China, partner schools and scholarship opportunities
One of the key ways children and young people can become responsible citizens and effective contributors in our increasingly inter-dependent and global society is through better understanding of other cultures, and this is best done by connecting with people from that culture and being immersed in it themselves. This group shall discuss the various opportunities afforded to young people to connect with China and Chinese people both through CISS led programmes, and individual partnerships made by Scottish schools with China.
14:15 Coffee/tea break
14:30 Breakout discussion – session 2
Theme 3 – Learning and teaching of Mandarin using technology: methodology, resources and multimedia teaching approaches
The pandemic accelerated the use of online platforms for remote learning to bring real-life language learning into schools. The creative use of film, video and audio can also greatly enhance language learning. Join this group to share your experience and discuss new and ground-breaking ways to engage young learners in Modern Languages with the help of technology.
Theme 4 – A framework for progression: Planning, pedagogy and assessment strategies
The 1+2 policy is now well established throughout the BGE but inconsistencies remain. Would a simple, straightforward Progression Pathway be useful to achieving consistency across schools and ensuring learners have an equitable, enjoyable and progressive L3 experience? How can an agreed framework with established pedagogy and assessment strategies allow teachers a route towards success for our young learners? This group shall look at ways in which we can collaborate in the planning, pedagogy and assessment strategies of L3 in the BGE.
