Simon Macaulay
CHAIR
Simon was the previous Vice-Chair of SCEN, and is a qualified teacher of French and Modern Studies. Simon previously worked for the Educational Institute of Scotland and more recently chaired the Scottish Government’s 1 + 2 Language Group. Simon is currently learning Mandarin.

James Brodie

A fluent speaker of Mandarin, James lived in Beijing from 2006-2012 but has travelled extensively on business throughout China, serving as an interpreter and cultural adviser to foreign companies, a role he has also performed for Chinese companies ‘going global’. After 8 years as Regional Director for Scotland & Northern Ireland and UK Energy Sector Lead, James recently transitioned to his current broader role, overseeing CBBC’s activity across the whole industrial economy. James has a BA (Hons) in Chinese Studies from the University of Sheffield.

Jessica Guo

Funder and Trustee of Asian Association of Culture Commerce and Education in Europe (AACCEE)
Jessica Guo is originally from China. She has been an education consultant since 1996 and also established her non- profit organisation AACCEE in 2014. She focuses on introducing Chinese language and traditional culture in Scotland, arranging various cultural exchange activities in a vast number of events. She also has more than 10 years work experience in school management leadership in local communities’ schools across Scotland.

Dr Alan Huang

Senior Teaching Fellow (Associate Professor), University of Strathclyde
Alan has a significant track record of leading teams in the design, development and delivery of innovative teaching programmes at school, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Alan has a strong research interest and recognised expertise in language education, teacher professional learning and digital education. His currently holds a number of key roles within the University and externally: University Senator, Course Leader, Faculty Chair of Internationalisation (China), External Examiner for PGCE Modern Languages at the University of Manchester. Before joining Strathclyde, Alan worked as Head of Mandarin at George Heriot’s School. Alan has a PhD in Education from the University of Edinburgh.

Juliet Presly

Depute Head Teacher, Boroughmuir High School
Juliet Presly is currently Depute Head Teacher at Boroughmuir High School in Edinburgh and has been in post since 2015. She has responsibility for Learning and Teaching, Professional Learning and Transition into S1. She has an honours degree from Edinburgh University in History and Sociology and having qualified as a History and Modern Studies Teacher in 1995 she taught initially at Madras College in Fife. She currently has responsibility as link for the Modern Languages Faculty at Boroughmuir.

Yun Shen
ONLINE COMMUNICATIONS AND ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER
Yun is currently a PhD student in Education at the University of Strathclyde. Her research project demonstrates a strong interest in language education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Event Management from Shanghai Normal University in China, and a Master of Arts in Applied Language Studies for TESOL from the University of Durham. She has eight years work experience in language teaching and event management in a language training centre in China. She specialises in planning, organising and implementing educational activities and events.
