SCEN LECTURE 2024
China's 21st Century Socio-economic Development: Towards 'common prosperity'?
SCEN is delighted to announce that this year's SCEN Lecture speaker will be Professor Jane Duckett.
The Lecture will be held on Thursday, 20 June 2024, 5:00pm - 8:00pm at the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

In 2021, the Chinese government announced it had eradicated extreme poverty and declared a new long-term national goal of achieving ‘common prosperity’. In this lecture, Professor Jane Duckett will review China’s socio-economic development trajectory over the last 25 years, with a particular focus on poverty reduction and welfare state expansion. She will then discuss the ‘common prosperity’ agenda and the challenges which China currently faces.
The talk will be followed by a networking opportunity. People who are associated with SCEN or interested in or involved with China or with language learning will be able to engage face-to-face. Refreshments will be available on arrival and during the networking portion of the evening.
School and university students are particularly welcome to attend this event.

The Confucius Institute for Scotland: Calligraphy & Brush Painting-Chinese Brush Painting Masterclass – Bamboo

Why should I take this course?
Bamboo has significant cultural importance in China and other East Asian countries, representing the good character of real gentlemen and nobles. The tradition of bamboo and orchid painting has been around for centuries, and some techniques have been used for over 1,000 years. Using Chinese soft brushes, ink and colours, you will be shown how to achieve beautiful paintings in the style of Chinese old masters.
What does it cover?
In this class, you will learn the fundamental techniques of Chinese brush painting, including the use of the brush, ink, and paper, as well as the basic strokes and styles of this art form. You will also explore the cultural and historical significance of Chinese brush painting and its influence on other art forms.
About the teacher:
This course will be led by Chi Zhang – an experienced instructor featured in the BBC documentary ‘The art of Chinese brush painting’, shortlisted for ‘Sky TV Landscape Artist of the year 2015’, whose work was projected across Edinburgh castle during the 2015 Military Tattoo.

The unique Chinese landscape painting developed more than a thousand years ago and was brought to perfection by generations of master painters.’ Landscape, Shan Shui, translated as ‘mountain and water’, is among the most popular subjects in Chinese brush painting. This class will introduce the history of Chinese landscape painting and the standard techniques related to Chinese soft brushes and ink.

SCEN will be holding a Youth Event for students of Grantown Grammar School and local primaries. This event will engage with younger students to encourage them to take Mandarin throughout their secondary schooling.
