SCEN Update - October/November

Youth Voice within SCEN

We hope you are all well and continuing to work and study in these very difficult
conditions. Like most organisations, SCEN had to cancel a number of planned
events since the beginning of the pandemic and with the closure of schools
organising youth events was put on hold. The SCEN trustees have met (online)
along with the Advisory Council and we want to bring you up to date with our
plans.

SCEN AMBASSADORS

SCEN continues to support the work of teachers and students in schools through
the Ambassador Programme. Students can be awarded certificates at 3 levels for
the contribution to Chinese learning in school or with SCEN.

SCEN CONFERENCE

Before the pandemic, we were already discussing the difficulties in bringing
together young people for the Annual Conference. Growing pressures on teaching
time and shrinking budgets for schools meant travelling across Scotland and
releasing staff for a day were found to be increasingly challenging. The pandemic
has increased the complexity of bringing young people together to share their
experiences.

We would like to suggest the following options for this year’s National Event:
OPTION 1: A virtual conference through an online platform where each school presents
remotely. This would present schools the challenge of finding a way for students to
come together in school to watch and take part in an extended meeting.
OPTION 2: Schools would submit presentations as videos and these would be live streamed
and then uploaded to the SCEN website. This would allow schools to be included
throughout the session 2020-21.

FUTURE EVENTS

It is unlikely that we will be able to visit or bring together schools in the near
future. Again, we will be looking for a virtual platform to allow you to share the
learning of Chinese and China with others.
