April and May Intensive Chinese Language Courses

INTENSIVE BEGINNERS LANGUAGE CLASSES – 29th April to 10th May

This course requires no prior knowledge in Chinese and it aims to provide you with a basic knowledge of the Chinese economy, aspects of contemporary Chinese human relations and behaviour. It will also provide you with a basic knowledge of the Chinese language that is used commonly in the business environment and how to read simple business documents in Chinese. By the end of the course, students are expected to have mastered 70-80 commonly used Chinese characters and will know how to use some very simple Chinese expressions. 

The course begins on Monday 29th April and runs Monday to Friday for two weeks. The classes start each morning at 10:00hrs and will finish a 16:20hrs, there will be a 30 minute lunch break.

Each day the classes will begin with a Language Class, followed by a Cultural Class. Examples of what the cultural classes will include are painting, traditional tea ceremony or embroidery. You will then break for lunch, in the afternoon there will be language practice tutorials followed by either China through Films or a Chinese Music workshop.

The classes will be held in the Confucius Institute Offices based in the Post Graduate Building of Heriot Watt University.

POST BEGINNERS INTENSIVE LANGUAGE COURSE – 20TH May to 31st May

This course is intended for students who have studied Chinese for at least 90 hours (including both contact hours and self-guided study) and have mastered approximately 100 Chinese characters. 

The classes aim to build on your basic knowledge of the Chinese economy, aspects of contemporary Chinese human relations and behaviour. It will also improve your basic knowledge of the Chinese language that is commonly used in the business environment and improve your ability in being able to read business documents in Chinese. By the end of the course, they are expected to recognise and be able to write 150 of Chinese characters related to business.

The course begins on Monday 20th May and runs Monday to Friday for two weeks. The course starts each morning at 10:00hrs and will finish a 16:20hrs the first week, there will be a 30 minute lunch break.

Each day the classes will begin with a Language Class, followed by a Cultural Class. Examples of what the cultural classes will include are information about Chinese Festivals, Mahjong, and the different types of cuisine in China. You will then break for lunch, in the afternoon there will be language practice tutorials followed by either a Business Etiquette or Chinese for Travelling in China class.

The classes will be in the Confucius Institute Offices based in the Post Graduate Building of Heriot Watt University.
