The Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors

Frances Christensen, General Manager of the Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh, has asked me to let you know about this marvellous opportunity:

The Confucius Institute for Scotland in the University of Edinburgh is marking the arrival of the Year of the Horse with a magnificent free exhibition in Old College Quad just off South Bridge.  The Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors will be in place from 29 January to 7th February.

Inspired by the ancient Terracotta Warriors of Xi'an, each evening from 4.00 pm-9.00 pm up to 90 larger-than-life-size lanterns, illuminated in different colours, will populate Old College quad.

As you can see from the attached flyer, this will be a stunning exhibition to mark Chinese New Year.

The Confucius Institute for Scotland is delighted to be able to present this installation along with our partners in the University of Edinburgh, Event International and Chaoyang Cultural Centre, Beijing. Originally created by Chinese artist Xia Nan for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, this is the first time the Lantern Warrior Army will be showcased in Scotland.

Thank you for letting us know, Frances!

I also attach a letter of invitation to you from Professor Natascha Gentz, Chair of Chinese, Dean International China and Director of the Confucius Institute for Scotland at the University of Edinburgh.

Professor Gentz is inviting you to attend the Opening Reception and Launch of The Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition, which is to be installed in the Quad of Old College at the University of Edinburgh to mark the eve of the Year of the Horse on Thursday 30 January 2014. The Reception, to which you are very warmly welcomed, will take place in the magnificent Playfair Library.
