How Social Media is Changing China

Please join us for a forthcoming talk 'How Social Media is Changing China' by renowned journalist, author, and broadcaster, Prof Zhang Lifen of Fudan University on 6 April at 6pm. This is the first talk of our 2017 Distinguished Lecture Series

Currently Professor Zhang Lifen is based in the School of Journalism at Fudan University and holds the post of Chief Advisor for China Business News.

He has a long career in the media having initially spent 10 years in the BBC as assistant producer; producer; senior producer; senior trainer in journalism & production; and news & current affairs editor at the BBC World Service. He went on to take up the post of associate editor of the Financial Times and was the founding editor of FTChinese.com - an award winning business focused online publication

China is a giant of social media in the world, rewriting human communication history. The country is now sitting at the global top table in terms of social media innovation and usage. However, the booming of social media in China also calls for a reality-check with contradictions about its regulatory regime and information control. In many ways the internet in China resembles a gigantic intranet and is far from free. His lecture will focus on the question 'How is Social Media Changing China?' He will explain why, in his view, social media, a national obsession and blessing, presents a dilemma to the government and the state of journalism in China.

This lecture will be held in Seminar Room LG.09, lower ground floor, David Hume Tower, George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9JX, on Thursday 6 April 2017.

It will run from 6pm-7:30pm followed by Q&A and a  networking reception
